BREAKING NEWS FROM CNN
AND NUMEROUS OTHER MEDIA OUTLETS
"(Richard) Jewell went from hero to suspect to innocent."
Reminder: This is the security guard who identified a suspicious package and began moving people away from it during the Olympic Games in Atlanta in 1996. The package turned out to contain a bomb, which went off, killing one person and wounding more than 100, including Jewell himself.
He was originally hailed as a hero for moving people away, but he was later hated by most Americans for 88 days when the FBI declared him their top suspect, saying that he had set off the bomb to give himself an opportunity to be a hero.
Nine years later, Eric Robert Rudolph pleaded guilty to the bombing. But until then, Richard Jewell undoubtedly was gawked at by thousands who needed someone to blame, even after he had been declared "no longer a person of interest" by the FBI.
So let me get this straight.... he went from "Hero to Suspect to INNOCENT?" What takes away the HERO status? The fact is, the man was ALWAYS innocent and he DID in fact, save MANY LIVES that day. Is it any wonder that we have so few genuine heroes anymore?
So, instead of memorializing him as a "One-time suspect," shouldn't the headline read:
"Olympic park bomb HERO dies?"
Rest in peace, Richard Jewell,...hero.
